Dr. Liechenstein conducts a private psychotherapy practice in New York City. She has nearly 25 years of experience in counseling people with a wide variety of emotional and interpersonal problems. She received psychoanalytic training at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis and the American Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

In 1993, she earned a Ph.D. in therapeutic counseling from the Open International University for Complementary Medicine. Over time, her spiritual studies have more and more integrated with the psychoanalytic background. She believes that the combined approach can provide deeper and more uplifting insights into her clients' crisis situations or long-standing difficulties.

In addition to individual sessions, Joyce enjoys working with couples--straight, lesbian or gay. She is certified as a mediator by the Theodore Kheel Institute for Mediation and Conflict. This background in conflict resolution lends a problem-solving focus to the process and often results in the couples seeing their situation from a fresh perspective.

SOME HEALING TOOLS JOYCE USES

Depending on clients' interests and preferences, Joyce may draw on a number of healing tools she has studied. These tools enhance and often speed the therapeutic process, clearing out repetitive patterns and emotional blockages that talk therapy alone may not change. Some of these techniques are:

MEDITATION, GUIDED IMAGERY, AND NLP: Joyce has taught meditation to groups, classes, and individuals for many years. Her clients find that meditation and guided imagery bring them to a place of stillness where they move more quickly out of emotional upheaval or stress into inner peace. These methods enable clients to tap into an inner wisdom. With guidance coming from their spiritual core, they discover new insights into their difficulties and how to move out of them.

Joyce is also a certified practitioner of NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming). This system helps clients discover and dialogue with parts of their being that seem to be working at cross purposes with more conscious goals.

FLOWER REMEDIES: Joyce began studying these natural catalysts in 1986 and soon began making them available to clients. She finds that the remedies speed the healing process by increasing awareness of habitual thought patterns that keep people stuck and by supporting the safe release of emotional backlogs.

The remedies she uses include offerings by Bach Flower Remedies, Flower Essence Society, Alaskan Flower Essence Project, and Desert Alchemy. (For more information on these remedies--also known as flower essences--visit Vibration Magazine, a free online educational quarterly.)

ENERGY WORK: Joyce is a Reiki master and has been initiated into a variety of other energy systems including MariEl, Joh Rei and The Reconnection. Both physical and emotional blockages can be relieved with the increased flow of energy that these systems provide.
